Sectors grow sales 2% and 4% respectively in 52 weeks to March 11.
Sales for Sainsbury’s general merchandise and clothing divisions are outperforming the market, the grocer has revealed today.
The retailer reported its preliminary results for the 52 weeks to March 11, 2017 this morning, showing over two per cent growth for general merchandise and over four per cent for clothing.
In addition, Argos grew sales by 4.1%. It is the number one retailer for toys and second in the market for homeware and electrical products, Sainsbury’s reported.
There are now 59 Argos stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets and 207 digital collection points. Like-for-like sales at Argos stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets that have been open for more than one year are up between 20 and 30%.
Sainsbury’s said it expects to continue to benefit from a 1-2% uplift in supermarket sales where there is an Argos Digital store.
It also expects to deliver its £160 million EBITDA synergy target six months early and is accelerating plans to open 250 Argos Digital stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets.
Digital sales continue to grow, with 53% of sales now made online. Mobile participation also grew 60% this year.
60 Argos high street stores will be transformed to the new digital format in 2017/2018, meaning that over one third of the Argos store estate will be digital in a year’s time.
