Eagerly anticipated Disney movie also sets international record for animation launch.
Frozen 2 has got off to a lightening start – notching up $350 million worldwide from its first five days and also bagging the highest international launch for an animation.
The eagerly anticipated sequel – which hit UK cinemas on November 22 – earned $223.2 million from 37 international markets in the highest international debut of all time for an animation, reported Screen Daily. The previous record was $152 million set by Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
China took the most on $53 million, followed by South Korea ($31.5m), Japan ($18.2m), UK ($17.8m), Germany ($14.9m), France ($13.4m), Mexico ($9.3m), Indonesia ($6.2m), Philippines ($6.1m) and Spain ($5.8m).
Frozen 2 also had the highest opening weekend ever for an animated title in the UK (over three days).
It also set the highest Imax opening for an animated film, earning $18 million globally and $9.7 million internationally for an Imax record for an animated film’s international release.
The original Frozen – which was released in 2013 – notched up $873.5 million at the international box office and ranks as the highest grossing animation of all time worldwide on $1.274 billion.
