Gap adds Mattel’s Richard Dickson as new ceo

Richard Dickson – the man widely credited with the revival of the Barbie brand at Mattel – has been appointed as Gap’s new chief executive officer.

Richard (pictured) joins the company from his most recent role as president and chief operating officer at Mattel, where, as well as Barbie, he also helped to revigorate brands including Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price.

He replaces interim ceo, Bobby Martin, who will remain chair of the board and ensure a smooth transition.

“Gap Inc. is a portfolio of iconic brands, known for having defined American style with bold thinking and making quality fashion accessible to millions,” commented Richard. “But it’s the work ahead that excites me most – the chance to work hand-in-hand with the teams to evolve Gap Inc. for a new era.

“Under Bobby’s leadership, the team has begun to truly reset the company for long-term success, establishing a new foundation that I’m eager to build on.”

Earlier this year, Mattel and Gap unveiled a new apparel collaboration inspired by Mattel’s portfolio of brands and Gap’s signature icons, with the first product drop being the Barbie x Gap collection.
