Scooby-Doo named Britain’s favourite cartoon character

Canine comes out on top in new study conducted by Boomerang.

Scooby-Doo has been named Britain’s favourite cartoon character of all time in a poll carried out by TV channel Boomerang.

The mystery solving Great Dane beat Peppa Pig, Tom and Jerry, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Garfield for the number one spot in the study.

In addition, not only did Scooby-Doo win on-screen favourite animal, but off-screen dogs ranked number one in the poll as preferred pet amongst both parents and kids with more than half (56%) of the vote.

Cats came in second overall at 37% and to round up the top three, kids listed a horse as a great pet option (19.2%), while parents found a pet fish to be more practical (27.7%), especially in London (29.4%).

Looking specifically at the impact on-screen animals had on kids, a significant proportion of parents (50.5%) said they let their kids watch TV shows because animals make their children laugh and smile.

The similarities between Scooby-Doo and the survey findings continued with 62% of kids finding it funny when their pet acts or sounds like a human and chases someone. Furthermore, a quarter (25%) of kids and parents said their pet was named after a character from a cartoon or film.

Last year, Scooby-Doo came out on top in a Sky Kids poll to find the nation’s all-time favourite kids TV show.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo airs on Boomerang from Monday May 29.
