Rovio enjoys strong growth for first half of 2016

Games business is ‘thriving’ while Angry Birds Movie has grossed over $347m at global box office.

Rovio Entertainment is celebrating healthy growth for the first half of 2016 – before the profits from The Angry Birds Movie have been added to the books.

The company earned €76.4 million in revenue for the first half of the year – an improvement of €10.3 million year on year.

Rovio finished the first half with an EBIT result of €5.7 million, a €15.9 million improvement over the same period last year.

The company says that its games business is ‘thriving’, with year on year revenue growth of 24%.

The animation business was also boosted by the release of The Angry Birds Movie. The film opened at number one in 52 countries – including China and the US. It has so far grossed over $347 million at the global box office, and is set to open in Japan on October 1.

Rovio’s ceo Kati Levoranta commented: “With the excellent performance of our games portfolio and the fantastic movie, the Angry Birds brand is flying high and we are seeing positive EBIT and cash flow development, while fulfilling our mission to create world class entertainment.

“We currently have several exciting new games and other projects in development, including new IP, and we have started planning the sequel to The Angry Birds Movie.”

The DVD release of the movie is planned for most of Europe in September.

The company’s chief commercial officer, Alex Lambeek, told The Source at Licensing Expo in June that the arrival of the movie had changed the company forever – from publishing apps back in 2009, to really getting into the storytelling business.
