Lidl boss reveals ambitious UK store roll out plan

Value retailer to open a further 60 stores per year in the UK with £1.45 billion push.

The chief executive of Lidl – Christian Härtnagel – has said the retailer is set to double its UK store opening plan from 30 to 60 stores per year.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Christian revealed plans for the value retailer to open ‘at least one shop a week’ as part of a £1.45 billion expansion drive.

The further 60 stores per year will fill the gaps where shoppers don’t have close access to a Lidl outlet. It has reportedly already agreed locations for between 50 and 60 stores to open over the next two years.

There are also plans to invest heavily in Lidl’s distribution network – although there are no plans for an online offering in the UK, Christian outlined.

The news follows on from the announcement earlier this year that Lidl is due to open 100 stores in the US.
