Revolting Rhymes, Hey Duggee among BAFTA Kids winners

Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Pokémon Go, SpongeBob Squarepants also victorious.

The winners of the 2017 British Academy Children’s Awards were revealed last night (November 26) at a glittering ceremony at London’s Roundhouse.

A number of licensed properties walked away with accolades.

These included Hey Duggee, which picked up Preschool Animation for the second year, while its interactive app – Hey Duggee: We Love Animals – won in the Interactive category.

BBC’s director of children’s content, Henrietta Hurford-Jones, commented: “We’re delighted that Hey Duggee has won best animation for a second year and to get recognition for the app is the icing on the cake.

“Adults and children around the world love the show because it combines learning through play with a gently British sense of humour.”

The animated films of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes won in the Animation category.

Magic Light Pictures co-founder, Martin Pope, said: “To be awarded the top prize against such stiff competition is a huge honour. We are thrilled that audiences young and old enjoyed Revolting Rhymes and it is wonderful that the BAFTA jury agreed with them.”

Blue Zoo Animation Studio won for Independent Production Company of the Year, its first win at the awards following nominations in 2014 and 2016. Pokémon Go, the location-based augmented reality game, won in the Game category. Earlier this year it won a BAFTA at the 2017 British Academy Games Awards.

In addition, SpongeBob Squarepants triumphed in the International category, while Dame Jacqueline Wilson received the Special Award for her outstanding contribution to children’s media.

Elsewhere, online educational channel TrueTube won Channel of the Year – the first time the category has gone to an online only channel.
