Team GB tie up to boost Aldi in 2016

Official supermarket partner status to raise profile of discounter even further.

Aldi is eyeing up its fastest ever rate of growth in the UK this year, with plans to open a further 80 stores, as well as being bolstered by its status as the official supermarket partner of Team GB.

The chain holds a direct to retail licence across a number of categories for Team GB. This includes apparel, accessories and back to school.

Product is due to launch on April 27 2016, exactly 100 days to the opening of Rio 2016.

Meanwhile, the store opening plan would take the £6 billion UK chain to over 700 stores, the retailer confirmed to The Mail on Sunday.

The 80 branch target is 23% more than in 2015.

Joint md of buying at Aldi UK, Jonathan Neale, told MOS: “We’re seeing a permanent, structural change in the shopping habits of UK consumers.

“They now know they can get all the products they want at significantly cheaper prices than at other supermarkets.”

Rival German discount chain Lidl is planning to open up to 50 new stores this year.

Aldi and Lidl now account for 10% of the grocery market share, according to market research company Kantar.
