Apple ready to take on Netflix with Apple TV+

Subscription service promises access to exclusive original shows, movies and documentaries.

Apple has unveiled its rival to Netflix and Amazon’s streaming services, with Apple TV+ promising to give users access to exclusive original shows, movies and documentaries.

The original video subscription service will feature a new slate of programming from creative artists including Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and M Night Shyamalan among others, Apple revealed in a special event yesterday (March 25).

Eddy Cue, Apple’s svp of internet software and services, said: “We’re honoured that the absolute best line-up of storytellers in the world – both in front of and behind the camera – are coming to Apple TV+.

“Apple TV+ will be home to some of the highest quality original storytelling that TV and movie lovers have seen yet.”

In addition, Apple also debuted the new Apple TV app and Apple TV channels which will launch in May. It promises that the app will bring together the different ways to discover and watch shows, movies, sports, news and more in one app across iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, smart TVs and streaming devices.

Users will be able to subscribe to and watch new Apple TV channels, all on demand.

However, a report on Sky News suggested that Apple – while its offer was formidable – was unlikely to take down Netflix, which is approaching 150 million subscribers thanks, in part, to its original content.
