UK’s creative industries now worth £84.1bn

The BFG, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers and Poldark highlighted in new Government report.

The UK’s creative industries – including the music, film, video games, TV and publishing sectors – are now worth a record £84.1 billion to the UK economy, according to new Government figures.

Notably, the statistics show the sector growing at almost twice the rate of the wider UK economy – generating £9.6 million per hour.

2016 is also set to be another strong year across the different creative sectors, with the report highlighting the likes of the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG, the next series of Poldark and the release of LEGO Marvel’s Avengers.

“The creative industries are one of the UK’s greatest success stories, and with British musicians, artists, fashion brands and films immediately recognisable in nations across the globe,” commented Minister for Culture, Ed Vaizey.

“Growing at almost twice the rate of the wider economy and worth a staggering £84 billion a year, our creative industries are well and truly thriving and we are determined to ensure its continued growth and success.”

The Government continues to create initiatives to allow the creative industries to keep growing, including tax reliefs, inward investment and safeguarding music and cultural education programmes.
