Primark ‘click and collect’ rumours nixed

‘No plans in the near future’ for trial says retailer after reports begin circulating earlier this week.

Contrary to reports which began circulating earlier this week, Primark is not about to trial online shopping.

Several publications – including The Sun – reported yesterday (April 23) that a click and collect initiative was ‘on the horizon’. This followed on from a report from financial management company Davy which said that Primark’s chief executive Paul Marchant told a group of analysts earlier this month that it would be looking into launching the service.

However, The Independent was told by a Primark spokesperson that – while the internet is an important platform for the retailer – online shopping is not currently on the cards.

Part of the statement said: “From time to time we will look at click-and-collect as one possible option to extend our customer service. However, there are no plans in the near future to trial click and collect.”

The news comes as Primark reported a 4.4% rise in sales for the 24 weeks to March 2, 2019 – ahead of last year – driven by an increased retail selling space partially offset by a 1.5% decline in like for like sales.

The retailer also confirmed that profit was 25% ahead of last year, while customer reaction to new spring/summer ranges has been encouraging.

UK sales were 2.3% ahead of last year, with like for like sales growth of 0.6%.
