Tudors inspire Historic Royal Palaces licensees

Classic and contemporary designs from partners including Halcyon Days and Clogau court success.

The trend for authentic, heritage design – as seen at Hampton Court Palace, the home of Henry VIII – has become a source of inspiration for a number of Historic Royal Palaces’ licensees.

Royal warrant holders Halcyon Days launched its Aragon fine bone china range this spring, achieving strong listings with retailers including Fortnum & Mason and Harrods.

The design was inspired by both the Tudor chimneys at Hampton Court Palace and the ‘Chimney Weave’ furnishing fabric designed by fellow licensee GP&J Baker.

“Halcyon Days has enjoyed a long association with Historic Royal Palaces,” said Pamela Harper, chairman and ceo of Halcyon Days. “This is a wonderful relationship, where craftsmanship and art are key to the design process. The Aragon collection is a major success and is destined to become a classic.”

Meanwhile, Clogau Gold’s Tudor Court range – inspired by the quatrefoil design in Anne Boleyn’s gateway at Hampton Court Palace – has also seen huge success, selling over 12,000 pieces of jewellery since launch.

The range now includes seven unique designs with a further eight designs in development including a new product category for Historic Royal Palaces – ladies and gentlemen’s watches.

The royal seal of approval offered by the licence has boosted sales across Clogau boutiques, independent retailers, the Signet Group (including Ernest Jones), as well as QVC UK, TSVN Australia and various travel retail outlets such as Virgin Atlantic.

“I’m delighted with the success of the Tudor Court collection,” said Sonia Menezes, head of brand development at Clogau Gold. “The story behind the design is a huge selling point. The fascination for the Tudor dynasty is as strong as it has ever been, with historical architecture, gem stones and colours associated with the Tudor court, provide an abundance of inspiration.”

Emma Saunders, head of retail business development at Historic Royal Palaces, added: “The opulence, artistry and craftsmanship of the Tudors is brought to life at Hampton Court Palace, and as the guardians of over 1,000 years of history, it is just one of the many stories Historic Royal Palaces shares through our licensing programme.

“These collections beautifully reflect how our licensees are inspired by the past to create successful and commercial product for today.”
