Amazon blocked 10 billion fake items last year

State of the art machine learning technology blocks more than 10bn listings from being sold on its marketplace in 2020.

Amazon blocked 10 billion fake items and destroyed millions more last year.

State of the art machine learning technology – which automatically scans listings and removed suspected counterfeits – prevented a stunning 10 billion fake items from being sold on its marketplace last year, a 67% increase in 2019.

Amazon also confirmed that it destroyed over two million counterfeit products sent to its warehouses last year before they could be sold, reported Retail Gazette. The retailer’s verification system also prevented some six million ‘suspicious’ seller accounts from being created.

Amazon said that it spent $700 million on its anti-counterfeit measures last year, employing over 10,000 new staff to tackle the problem of fraudulent sellers. A growing number of scammers are targeting a new wave of inexperienced online shoppers who turned to ecommerce for the first time during the pandemic.
