‘It’s a rare thing to surprise people in a movie’

Marvel Studios boss speaks ahead of Captain America: Civil War release.

The head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, has said it is “very satisfying” to be able to surprise the audience in a comic book movie, as it is such a rare thing.

Speaking to The Times ahead of the release of Captain America: Civil War today (April 29), Kevin said: “It’s a rare thing to surprise people, or do a twist, in any movie.

“But to do it in a comic book movie, where people have very fixed expectations of how these movies work, that’s very satisfying.”

Kevin, who as well as Captain America has produced Thor and Iron Man among others, has significantly helped raise the profile of Marvel – The Times says by 2011, it was generating $6 billion annually in licensing revenue for Disney.

However, he says that he “rarely thinks about the financial achievement” and admits to knowing little about the successful brand expansion into consumer products for the characters.
