Star Wars and Harry Potter help Scholastic Q2

Children’s book publishing revenue up slightly during the period ending November 30.

Scholastic has reported a slight increase in revenue in its children’s book publishing business for the quarter ending November 30.

The division rose 1% during the period to $414 million.

Among the titles that sold well were Star Wars books, the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the Harry Potter Colouring Book and Goosebumps titles.

However, overall the publisher reported a revenue fall to $601.8 million from $611.1  million, citing the negative impact of foreign exchange as a key factor (without this, sales would have been $619 million). Net income also fell to $64.9 million from $68.5 million.

While operations in the UK, Australia and India grew in local currency terms, these gains were more than offset when converted into US dollars, according to the company.
