Sony Pictures readies new Men in Black push

New programme will include classic franchise as well as studio’s upcoming spin-off.

Sony Pictures Consumer Products is developing a comprehensive programme around the Men in Black franchise.

The new initiative will include the classic franchise, as well as the studio’s upcoming Men in Black spin-off, which is due for release in the US in June 2019.

The company is aiming for another strong franchise programme in support of Men in Black, with year-round opportunities for a multi-generational audience. This follows on from the studio’s recent success with the classic Jumanji franchise and the recent film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Funko will be producing lines for Men in Black for the first time, including new vinyl POP figures based on the classic film characters. Later, it will roll out a programme based on the new film timed to coincide with its release.

As SPCP’s master publishing licensee for Men in Black, Titan Publishing will be crafting a coffee table book that covers all three classic films plus the all-new film. The coffee table book will showcase behind the scenes material, never before seen photos, illustrations, interviews and more. Titan Publishing will also be releasing a novelisation of the new film slated to run prior to the film’s release.

Also on board are Bioworld and Changes for classic MIB product, debuting in the autumn. A full apparel programme based on the new film will also be available for licensing.

“There is tremendous excitement among licensees for this new film,” said Jamie Stevens, evp of worldwide consumer products at Sony Pictures Entertainment. “Likewise, the fan anticipation is building and we expect strong consumer demand for MIB.”
