“It is all about giving value”

Sainsbury’s Abi Wilson on appealing to the discretionary spend.

For retailers, having the right property is key, but Sainsbury’s Abi Wilson believes that the right techniques are just as important.

Speaking to Licensing Source Book as part of the judging of the product categories for this year’s Licensing Awards, Abi (pictured) – buying manager at Sainsbury’s – also stated that consumers were looking for the fun factor.

“It is about having fun – the rise of the llamas, unicorns are still going strong (helped by Fluffy from Despicable Me 3) and now sloths (Zootropolis will have helped on this score),” she told LSB.

Abi continued: “It is not just about having the right properties, but the techniques too, whether with reversible sequins, embroidery, applique – it is all about giving value and appealing to the discretionary spend.”
