LEGO further expands mixed reality offer

LEGO Playgrounds to bring selected sets and experiences to life for fans.

LEGO has unveiled LEGO Playgrounds, a new app-based channel which aims to deliver a variety of experimental LEGO play experiences and scenarios for fans.

The portal is one of the latest digital innovations by the company as it aims to ‘unify’ the digital and physical LEGO worlds for fans.

Beginning with LEGO Ninjago, it will bring selected LEGO sets and experiences to life in mixed reality experiments and other scenarios directly in the app store.

Using the LEGO Ninjago theme, the first playground uses AR technology to detect selected physical LEGO Ninjago Dragon Hunters sets and bring them to life with effects, animations and interactions.

Two players can connect and play together in the same shared play space, battling against the Dragon Hunters, sharing power ups and 3D assets, creating strategies and comparing high scores.

In addition, there is also an option to play five levels without a physical LEGO set.

The LEGO Playgrounds app is free to play, with no in-app purchases or any ads or marketing messages.

“Children today are mastering the art of finding new moments and forms of play and LEGO Playgrounds will provide a ‘live’ opportunity to test and learn directly with them,” explained Tom Donaldson, vp of Creative Play Lab at the LEGO Group. “It’s truly a unique way to engage with them in a fun and experimental way and bring them close to our innovation process.”
