Mog helps Sainsbury’s to market share gain

Grocer was only one of ‘big four’ to report rising sales and market share in latest Kantar figures.

Sainsbury’s has outperformed its rivals for the third consecutive month, according to new grocery figures from Kantar.

In the 12 weeks ending December 6, Sainsbury’s sales grew 1.2% and its market share was up to 16.7% (from 16.5%).

While Sainsbury’s run of success predates the launch of its popular Mog’s Christmas Calamity campaign, it no doubt contributed to the last couple of weeks during the period.

Meanwhile, Tesco and Asda suffered declines of 3.4% during the period, while Morrisons slipped by 2%.

The discounters continued to perform well – Aldi’s sales rose by 15.4% and Lidl’s increased by 17.9%. They retained a combined market share of 10%.

Each should also expect to attract 10 million shoppers over the festive period, Kantar predicted.
