The Force Awakens closes in on Avatar

Episode VII hit the $1.5bn mark at the global box office this weekend.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is closing in on the global box office record set by Avatar – with figures confirming that it hit the $1.5 billion milestone over the weekend.

The movie has now made $740.3 million at the US and Canadian box office. Avatar is the highest grossing movie in North America, standing at $760.8 million.

Meanwhile, according to Den of Geek, outside of America The Force Awakens has totalled $770 million, and it should be the fourth biggest film of all time by the middle of the week.

In the UK, it is predicted to have taken £100 million by next weekend.

The Force Awakens will open in China – the world’s second largest box office – on January 9.

All eyes are now on Avatar’s global total of $2.78 billion.
