In the news this week… Retail Round-up

Including Aldi and Lidl reaching combined market share high.

The Source rounds up some of the key retail stories of the week.

The administrators of BHS have apparently secured a deal to sell over 70 of its stores and its website. Qatari group Al Mana – which has a franchise arrangement for some of BHS’ international stores – has agreed the deal with Duff & Phelps according to reports.

The early launch of its clearance sale helped John Lewis to a 7.3% increase in sales to £96.68 million for the week ending June 25. Electronics and home technology was up 10.2%, while the home category grew 9.5% and fashion was up 4.1%. Despite the weather, outdoor living sales also grew 9.7%.

Aldi and Lidl have reached a combined market share high of 10.5% – holding 6.1% and 4.4% respectively – according to the latest figures from Kantar. Overall grocery sector sales slipped for the first time since the beginning of the year, down 0.2% for the 12 weeks to June 19. However, Lidl enjoyed sales growth of 13.8% while Aldi was up 11.5% compared with the same period last year. 58% of Britons visited the stores at least once during the period.

Amazon Fresh has expanded its delivery area in London, adding a further 59 postcodes. Amazon Prime members in 128 London postcodes can now use the service.

Value retailer Wilko has seen its profits before tax rise 15% for the year to January 30 2016. Profits before tax increased to £25.955 million, while sales were lifted by 1.4% to £1.46 billion. The retailer opened eight new stores and relocated a further four during the period. It has over 370 stores nationwide and is eyeing further growth across London.
