Giraffes Can’t Dance heads to the stage

Bestselling picture book by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees is marking 20th anniversary.

Bestselling picture book Giraffes Can’t Dance will be turned into a stage show for its 20th anniversary year for Christmas.

The production based on the book by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees is being produced in association with Hachette Children’s Group and Coolabi Group.

It will run in the Curve theatre in Leicester from December 9-31.

The stage rights deal was signed between Karen Lawler, head of licensed content for Hachette Children’s Group, and Simon Friend, for Simon Friend Entertainment.

“Giraffes Can’t Dance is a modern classic, beloved by millions of families all over the world,” said Karen. “At its heart is an important message of self-acceptance and being yourself. I know children will love boogieing along with Gerald as he discovers the joy of dancing to his own tune.”

Following its run at Curve, the stage adaptation will move to the Rose Theatre in Kingston from April 8-19, before embarking on a national tour.

Giraffes Can’t Dance was first published by Orchard Books in 1999 and has gone on to be translated into 34 languages, selling millions of copies worldwide.

The 20th anniversary is also being backed with a publishing programme which showcases the story in a variety of new formats.
