New apparel collection has been inspired by the companies shared love of the oceans.
The Natural History Museum has partnered with Finisterre to create a capsule collection featuring embroidered t-shirts, printed shirts, reversible swimwear and packable accessories, all inspired by the themes of sea travel and exploration.
Created from illustrations held in the Museum’s Library and Archives collection, the range was influenced by the work of renowned naturalists Charles Darwin and Maria Sibylla Merian, both of whom travelled the seas extensively in order to research their subjects. Their work has subsequently had a dramatic impact on our understanding of the natural world.
Finisterre offers functional and sustainable product for sea-lovers, with an ambition to inspire a deeper connection to the sea – and it is this shared respect for our oceans that motivated the collaboration.
From shirts, tees and dresses made from sustainable organic cotton to swimwear and accessories built with recycled polyester and ECONYL recycled yarn, recovered from marine waste and discarded fishing nets, the product range has been built to have as little impact on the planet as possible.
“We are incredibly happy to be working with Finisterre and their creative team on the development and launch of this collection,” said Maxine Lister, head of licensing at the Natural History Museum. “This collection has showcased how to adapt historical artworks into a contemporary apparel line that is both trend-driven but also highlights the beauty of the natural world.”
Laura Akins, lead womenswear designer at Finisterre, added: “It was a privilege to be granted behind the scenes access to the Museum’s extensive archives. From a design perspective it was the striking illustrations that first captured our attention, but it was also the stories of their explorations that we wanted to celebrate in our key motifs and prints.”
