Pre-Christmas retail discounts set to surge

Sharpest cuts for seven years likely to hit UK high street this weekend.

Retailers preparing for the final Christmas sales rush this week are poised to offer discounts of 45% on average.

This would mark the sharpest pre-Christmas price cuts since 2008, according to Deloitte.

The company said that discounts are currently at an average of 41.8%, as retailers look to shift stock left over from a slower than anticipated Black Friday and mild weather.

Deloitte analysed almost two million products for sale in the UK as part of its research, and said that fashion retailers would be most aggressive in their price cutting.

Discounts are set to rise even further after Christmas, with average discounts of more than 53% expected.
