Doctor Who fans name David Tennant best Doctor

Radio Times poll gets nearly 50,000 votes and sees the Tenth Doctor come out on top.

David Tennant has been voted as the favourite Doctor to date by fans of Doctor Who.

Almost 50,000 votes were cast in the Radio Times poll, with David – who played the Tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010 – facing off with the 12 other actors who have stepped into the character’s shoes in the 57-year history of the show.

However, it was a close run thing, with the current Doctor – Jodie Whittaker – taking the same 21% of the overall poll with David, with over 10,000 votes apiece. David just pipped Jodie to the post, however, with an extra 100 votes in the final count.

Peter Capaldi, who played the Twelfth Doctor from 2013 to 2017, came third with 18% of the vote.

Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor, and Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor, took fourth and fifth place respectively.

“Over a decade after he left the TARDIS behind and after nearly 50,00 votes were cast, it’s clear that David Tennant is still Doctor Who fans’ perfect 10,” said Huw Fullerton, RadioTimes.com’s sci-fi and fantasy editor. “But with Jodie Whittaker hot on his heels and a great showing for other recent Doctors like Peter Capaldi, it looks like fans also now hold other Time Lords close to their heart(s).”

David is currently reprising his role as the Tenth Doctor in a collection of different Big Finish audio adventures, with a new Dalek-themed series due for release in 2021.

Jodie will return in a festive special – also featuring the Daleks – due to air this winter, followed by her third series.
