McDonald’s swaps Happy Meal toys for books

Four HarperCollins titles – including Paddington – involved with US initiative.

McDonald’s restaurants in the US are swapping the traditional toys in Happy Meals for books – with Michael Bond’s Paddington being one of the chosen titles.

Running in stores until February 15, the special Valentine’s themed promotion will see four HarperCollins Children’s books distributed with the food.

As well as Paddington, these will include Clark the Shark Takes Heart, Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse and Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool.

This will mark the fourth year that McDonald’s has distributed books in this way, in partnership with HarperCollins and Reading Is Fundamental, the US’ largest children’s literacy non-profit organisation.

The company claims that it will have distributed more than 50 million books to children by the end of the year through sales and donations.
