First licensing deals secured for Super Sema ahead of International Women’s Day

In time for International Women’s Day (which takes place on 8 March), the first African animated kids’ superhero franchise – Super Sema – has revealed its third season, as well as a host of new licensing deals.

The third season of 12 new episodes will begin on 8 March on YouTube, accompanied by a slate of new educational and inspirational music videos.

Developed to increase media representation for Black children around the world and spark curiosity, creativity and a love of STEAM subjects in Gen Alpha (4-8), Super Sema has amassed over 110 million views across five language channels since its premiere in 2021.

Macmillan Children’s Books, Sweet Cherry and Poetic Brands are also on board with the franchise, thanks to deals brokered by UK and Eire agent, The Point.1888 which was brought on board by Super Sema’s parent company Kukua last year.

Macmillan Children’s Books has been appointed as master publisher for the brand in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Commonwealth countries. Publishing will launch in spring 2024 across a range of formats including colour and activity books, puzzle and sticker books, chapter books, audio and e-books among others.

Meanwhile, Sweet Cherry has acquired the rights to annuals, diaries and journals and will publish its first annual in 2024.

Poetic Brands is on board for daywear and nightwear and will create a range of products including swimwear, nightwear, clothing and luggage.

The news follows the successful launch of dolls and plush in the US with master toy partner Just Play, and an upcoming US publishing programme with Penguin Random House and Bendon.

“It’s no surprise that the Super Sema franchise has amassed such a huge following so quickly and its passionate and engaged fans deserve products that are fresh and exciting,” commented Katie Wilkinson, head of publishing and operations at The Point.1888. “The early brand licensing push in the US has been hugely successful, proving the consumer demand for Super Sema products. We’ve been thrilled with the incredible response we’ve had from partners and retailers so far and look forward to seeing this programme grow and grow.”

Vanessa Ford, chief brand officer at Kukua, continued: “We’re excited to be able to deliver on fan demand in the UK with such top-tier companies as Macmillan Children’s Books, Sweet Cherry and Poetic Brands.

“I want children who watch the show and read the books to see themselves in each page. I’ve seen with my own kids that positive black role models show them that they too can be the heroes, go on adventures and save the world.”
