Sanrio unveils new Gudetama brand

Raft of licensees already on board for ‘lazy egg’ property from Asia.

Sanrio has unveiled a raft of licensees for its latest creation, Gudetama – which means ‘lazy egg’.

Already a huge hit in Asia – boasting over 700,000 followers on Twitter – Gudetama is genderless and doesn’t have the will to live as it knows it will be eaten very soon, often wearily uttering phrases like ‘I will do it tomorrow’ and ‘leave me alone’.

The quirky egg works a number of different looks including sheltering under a bacon blanket in the cold weather.

Gudetama launched last year in the US, with pop-up restaurants and a DTR in 600 Hot Topic stores.

In the UK, Blueprint will be launching its stationery and gift range at Spring Fair next week (stand 3R08).

In addition, Pyramid Posters, CID, Hype, BC International and Funko are also on board, while t-shirts can be found in Uniqlo.

Further licensing deals are in the pipeline, with Sanrio saying the initial reaction from retailers has been very positive.
