The National Gallery eyes US and Far East growth

Museum is exhibiting for the first time at Licensing Expo as it looks to build programme.

The National Gallery is on a fact finding mission this week, exhibiting at Licensing Expo for the first time as it looks to grow its licensing programme further.

As well as North America, a key focus for 2017 is on the Far East, including Japan and China.

The National Gallery – which is working with JELC on the licensing programme – is the world’s third most visited museum, with over six million visitors per year and 60% international visitors.

It houses the English national collection of Western European art with 2,300 paintings from the 13th century to the early 20th century including Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Monet’s The Water-lily Pond and Leonardo da Vinci’s Virgin of the Rocks.

It launched its licensing programme in 2014 and now boasts 38 licensees ranging from stationery and dated products through to soft furnishings and wall coverings, £4,000 jackets with silk linings to wine and art materials.

Its 2016 Boots food gifting range performed particularly well, achieving 90% average sell-through.

The National Gallery can be found on booth E98 at Licensing Expo.
