Sir Patrick Stewart is reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard in a yet to be named CBS All Access series which will chronicle his life after Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Sir Patrick announced the news during a surprise appearance at the annual Star Trek convention, held in Las Vegas at the weekend.

He starred as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 178 episodes of Star Trek between 1987 and 1994, as well as in four films.

He commented: “It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions with him.”

Details on the new series – including the title and release date – remain under wraps, reported BBC News.

However, the executive producer Alex Kurtzman, was quoted in media reports as saying: “For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people and honour generations both new and old.”
