BBC Studios unveils new BBC Earth initiative with Preloaded

Landmark project explores the hidden world of insects and arachnids through Magic Leap headsets.

BBC Studios has partnered with immersive games studio Preloaded and the BBC Studios Natural History Unit on a new BBC Earth initiative.

BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses is for spatial computing platform, Magic Leap. Narrated by Stephen Fry, it brings the hidden stories of insects and arachnids into our world for the first time.

Users can get up close to a Leaf Cutter Ant colony in the tropical rainforests of Central America and encounter a Wandering Spider in the Atlantic Forest of Eastern Brazil, and learn about the extraordinary senses which help them survive and thrive in this spatial computing experience.

Developed as part of the Magic Leap Independent Creator Program it follows 2018’s BBC Earth: Life in VR.

“Our mission is to inform, educate and entertain,” said Tom Burton, head of interactive at BBC Studios. “With Micro Kingdoms – Senses and the immersive technology of Magic Leap we’re exploring new ways of engaging audiences with natural history storytelling.”

Phil Stuart, creative director at Preloaded, added: “With Micro Kingdoms: Senses we are proud to drive forward Preloaded’s mission of bringing inspiring, immersive content into the hands – and now the worlds – of mainstream audiences.”
