Ambitious company working with Microsoft to bring bestselling video games franchise to new formats.
Ambitious tabletop games publisher, Steamforged Games has been working with Microsoft and its first-party studio, The Coalition, to bring the hit Gears of War franchise to new formats.
Gears of War: The Card Game had its exclusive preview at the Gears 5 Esports Mexico City Major from March 6-8, and is due to hit retail in autumn/winter 2020.
The card game aims to offer an immersive new way for Gears of War fans to engage with the IP. The story-driven campaign style game will see the decisions made by the player in each narrative scenario have serious consequences on the battlefield.
Players will choose how they develop their force as they play through the scenarios, each with their own objective and terrain layout. Each win or loss will affect the contents of the deck in the next scenario, allowing success or failure to impact the experience of the game.
“We couldn’t be more excited working with Microsoft to bring the intense action narrative of Gears of War to the tabletop,” said Mat Hart, co-founder and creative lead of Steamforged Games. “This campaign driven card game fully immerses you into the original Gears storyline, and grips you until the very end.”
Released in 2006, Gears of War is one of Microsoft’s bestselling video games franchises and has spawned five further games.
As of 2016, the franchise has notched up $1 billion in gross revenue and sold 27 million copies.
