V&A to host Winnie the Pooh exhibition

Museum to stage first big show about character, opening in December 2017.

Winnie the Pooh is to follow in the footsteps of David Bowie, Alexander McQueen and Pink Floyd, with the V&A Museum set to host a dedicated exhibition to the character.

Winnie the Pooh: Exploring a Classic will be the first big show in the main museum targeted at families with young children.

It will run from December 9 2017 until April 8 2018.

Settings will be created by Tom Piper, who was the designer who created the red ceramic poppies installation at the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The exhibition – the largest to date on the character – will bring together loans from other collections including a Winnie the Pooh tea service presented to the young Princess Elizabeth, coming from the Royal Collection, original illustrations, letters, photographs, manuscripts, plus the museum’s own delicate pencil sketches by EH Shepard for the beloved characters, which are so fragile they have not been exhibited for 40 years.

There will also be ‘hunny’ from the hives on the roof of the museum.

Of interest to the licensing community will be a number of products from the 90 years of merchandising – including toys, games, ceramics and textiles – as well as the Walt Disney animations.

Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A, commented: “This is our first exhibition specifically for younger families and we look forward to welcoming another generation into AA Milne’s magical, intimate, joyous world.”
