New trio of Star Wars movies in the pipeline

Trilogy to be created by director of The Last Jedi; live action Star Wars series also planned.

Disney has today confirmed plans for a further three new Star Wars movies.

A deal has been struck with the director of the eagerly awaited Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Rian Johnson – to create the new trilogy.

In addition, Disney is also working on a live action Star Wars series for a new online streaming service.

The news was revealed at the same time as Disney reported its fourth quarter and full year results, ending September 30, 2017.

Consumer Products & Interactive Media revenues for the quarter decreased 6% to $1.2 billion, and segment operating income decreased 12% to $373 million due to a decrease at Disney’s merchandise licensing business.

Decreased sales of merchandise for Star Wars, Frozen and Finding Dory were reported, although Cars and Spider-Man saw increases.

Overall, Disney saw its first drop in annual profits since 2009 – profits for the year to September dipped 4% to $8.98 billion.

Chief executive Bob Iger said that Disney “remains optimistic about our future, in part because quality truly does matter.”

However, according to a report on BBC News, while he didn’t address reports that Disney had held talks with 21st Century Fox about acquiring part of its business, he also didn’t rule out an acquisition.

“I don’t think there’s ever such a thing as having too much quality,” he said.
