Primark eyes longer opening hours on December re-opening

Parent company Associated British Foods says fast fashion retailer expects “strong” demand when stores re-open after lockdown.

Primark is considering extending its opening hours to cope with an expected “strong” demand once stores can re-open their doors in December.

Speaking to the PA news agency, Associated British Foods’ finance chief John Bason said that the company is anticipating strong demand when stores are allowed to re-open their doors in England.

A new national lockdown is due to begin on Thursday November 5 and run through until December 2, during which time all non-essential retailers will be closed.

“We are absolutely looking at longer opening hours,” he said. “Safety will be paramount and our teams have worked very well to deal with demand and ensure queue management, so will continue to work hard to adapt to demand ahead of Christmas.

“We’ve seen very strong sales over the past few days and would expect similar today and tomorrow.”

Yesterday (Monday November 2), the company reported that it will lose £375 million due to the lockdowns across England and Europe.
