Amazon highlights key products to mark 20 years

Harry Potter, FIFA, Star Wars, Toy Story 3, Fifty Shades of Grey, Pokémon among top sellers over 20 years.

Harry Potter, Ed Sheeran, Tamagotchi, Star Wars and FIFA are among the brands and big names leading 20 years of online shopping for Amazon.

The etailer has looked back at the nation’s most loved products to mark the 20th anniversary of Amazon.co.uk.

Ed Sheeran’s X, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and The Da Vinci Code have been voted the best album, film and book respectively of the last 20 years, according to the poll.

Meanwhile, the Tamagotchi digital pet became a national obsession when it hit the UK in 1998 and now, 20 years later, nostalgic Brits have voted it the most influential toy of the last two decades (27%). Pokémon came second in the must-have toys list (24%), followed by Furby (22%) and Monopoly Millionaire (17%).

The more recent craze for fidget spinners saw the toys voted seventh (12%) in the top 20 list, just pipped by LEGO Harry Potter sets and Transformers (both 16%).

Meanwhile, a number of licensed favourites also appeared in the bestseller listings over the years on Amazon.co.uk.

These included Who Wants to be a Millionaire? (PC video game) in 2000; Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on PS2 (2002); FIFA Football 2004 on PS2 (2003); Star Wars Trilogy Episodes IV-VI on DVD (2004); Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker (2005), Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit on VHS (2006); Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on DVD (2007); Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (2009); Toy Story 3 on DVD (2010); Fifty Shades of Grey (2012); Halo 4 on Xbox 360 (2012); Despicable Me 2 on DVD (2013); Frozen on DVD (2014); FIFA 15 (2014); and Star Wars: The Force Awakens on DVD (2016) among others.

“Since we opened our virtual doors for the first time as an online bookseller in 1998, Amazon.co.uk has expanded year on year and now offers customers access to more than 250 million products,” said Doug Gurr, country manager Amazon.co.uk. “Looking back at the bestsellers and most loved products provides a nostalgic year-by-year snapshot of what has grabbed the nation’s attention.

“As we move forward, we’ll continue to innovate for our customers so that they can quickly and seamlessly discover and enjoy anything they might want to buy online.”
